Cardio exercise is sustained or repeated movement that increases the demand on your cardiovascular system: the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and working muscles. As the effort rises, breathing and heart rate increase to deliver more oxygen and support the energy needed to keep moving.

Steady Cardio and Intervals

Cardio is a training effect, not a single intensity. The same activity can be an easy session, sustained aerobic work, or a hard interval workout depending on pace, resistance, terrain, and rest.

Steady Cardio

Steady sessions keep the effort relatively consistent. They are well suited to developing aerobic endurance, practicing pacing, and exercising without making every workout a test. Brisk Walking, Cycling, Elliptical, and Rowing can all work well.

Intervals and HIIT

Intervals alternate harder work with easier movement or rest. They allow demanding cardiovascular work to be accumulated in short bouts, but they also create more fatigue and generally need more recovery. HIIT, Jump Rope, and Stair Climbing are natural fits, although almost any cardio activity can be structured as intervals.

The best option is not necessarily the one that burns the most Calories or produces the highest heart rate. It is the one that matches your goals, current capacity, available equipment, and preferences well enough to repeat consistently.

How To Judge Cardio Intensity

Start with how the effort feels. During moderate cardio, breathing is clearly harder, but you can usually talk, not sing. During vigorous cardio, you can say only a few words without pausing for breath. The talk test is a simple way to judge intensity without equipment.

How Much Cardio Do You Need?

For general health, the CDC recommends that adults work toward at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, 75 minutes of vigorous activity, or an equivalent combination each week. The guidance also includes muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days per week.

These are population-level targets, not a required workout length or personal prescription. Activity can be spread across the week and broken into smaller sessions, and some movement is better than none. Build duration and intensity gradually enough that the routine remains sustainable.
